"It is not the fish you catch but the experiences you gain from it, the company you keep, and the stories you go home with."

10/10/09 Dairyland Reservoir
This summer I had the opportunity to do some fishing in Northern Wisconsin, specifically Dairyland Reservoir or Flambeau Reservoir. Being familiar with the waters a little more south, it was a surprise to see it the color of my morning coffee or even tea. This came to a little bit of a surprise to me and when I asked why this was, I was told that the rain water washes from the trees and leaves in the area, giving the waters their color; completely safe and swimmable, just different.
This was going to be my first time fishing Muskie and although I was unable to land this fish, my family members were. I’ve heard stories of Muskie being the impossible fish to catch, but based on my experiences at Dairyland Reservoir, this was a common and exciting catch. Personally watching a few catches and one Muskie jump clear out of the water next to the boat proved to me that this might be the spot to catch this elusive fish. The waters we cool, weedy, and had low traffic; creating a perfect fishing experience.
Although I was unable to land any Muskie, I was successful with Smallmouth, which seemed to be another popular fish in these waters. They seemed to be hitting both the smaller top-water baits as well as the larger Muskie baits.
One of the most memorable experiences I can take away from this family vacation was when my fiancée, Robyn Simonic, my Grandfather, Darrell Taylor, and myself were fishing one evening on his boat. We were trying out a cove that seemed to be a nice little spot for Smallmouth. I casted out towards the shore and was pulling a top-water back to the boat in a walk the dog motion. All three of us watched as a Smallmouth exploded out of the water after the lure, knocking it at least two to three feet in the air on direction, as it went a foot in the other. It was truly remarkable and something few have ever had the opportunity of seeing.
9/26/09 Northern Hunting Fishing Days
Northern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days was a great experience. This happened to be my first time going so there was a lot to take in.
The children seemed to really enjoy the FREE fishing pod Sponsered by the Northern Match Anglers IL Smallmouth Alliance/B.S.A.NWSC Venture Crew 601. From what I observed a lot of excitment was had pulling in Bluegill by the minute.
Walking around the different booths in the Main Area I noticed quite a bit of vendors. There were Fly Casting/Tying Demonstrations Sponsored by D.R.I.F.T. who explained and showed very well, the great care and detail that goes into this craft.
Chauncey Niziol put on a very entertaining display; keeping the kids involved by asking trivia questions and handing out prices for correct answers. He did this all of course, while displaying some jig fishing techniques from atop an enormous transparent aquarium filled with common fresh water fish.
Again this was a very educational, enjoyable, and not to mention FREE experience. My only regret is that I did not have enough time to check out all the events. I would stongly suggest to check it out next year.
